How to provide data and submit a reflection to earn points
(The first time you access the Engaged Learning course you must Self-Enroll in Canvas. See below for instructions.)
There are two steps to complete before your experience reflection can be reviewed for approval. The steps must be entered into the different systems on the same day.
*Important note: You can’t use a date in the future as an end date for an experience. You must have performed the experience on/between the dates you enter in the Engaged Learning Experience Form. Future dates of anticipated performance will not accepted.
To submit your experience follow the steps below:
- Complete and submit an Engaged Learning Experience Details Form.
- The information you provide in the form will be used to report the points you earn to the Registrar's Office.
- The Name of the Experience you provide will populate on your Engaged Learning Transcript.
- When selecting the category for your experience refer to the Experience Lists to assign it. You must use the category in which your experience was approved. For example, Rider Resource Pantry must be assigned to Civic and Community Engagement; Datafest must be assigned to Guided Research and Scholarship. If you misassign an experience the Engaged Learning Coordinator will change it to the assigned category.
- Post your reflection on Canvas using the Engaged Learning "Course" Assignment.
- Self-enroll in the Engaged Learning "course" the first time you submit a reflection. See below for instructions.
- Each numbered Reflection assignment should be used only once for each reflection you submit. Each reflection you submit, including a resubmission of a previously submitted reflection, must be submitted in the next Reflection # form.
- Enter the name of your experience, the category you will earn points in, and the number of hours you have spent in the experience at the top of the reflection.
- Copy and paste the reflection questions into your document and respond to each. The reflection questions are found in the Canvas Engaged Learning Course Assignments Reflection # forms and on the Engaged Learning Program Reflections webpage
- Your reflection must be at least 250 words not including the questions.
- Copy and paste your reflection into the Canvas Reflection # form or upload it to the Canvas Reflection # form.
- Click Submit Assignment. If you do not click Submit Assignment your work will not be saved
Your reflection will be reviewed in Canvas and evaluated based on your responses to the five questions. Each question answered comprehensively will receive a score of 1. You must score 4-5 for your reflection to be approved to earn Engaged Learning points. If your total score is a 3 or below, you will NOT RECEIVE points for your Engaged Learning experience. In that case, the reviewer will ask you to revise or expand your reflection and resubmit it.
When your reflection is approved to earn points the Engaged Learning Coordinator will let you know using Canvas Messenger. At least once a week a report of earned point(s) is sent to the Registrar's Office.
Submit your reflection as soon as possible after you complete the experience. Graduating seniors should submit all Engaged Learning reflections at least 2-3 months prior to graduation. Allow 2-3 weeks for a reflection to be reviewed and for the earned points to be applied in DegreeWorks and on your ELTranscript.
You must Self-Enroll for Engaged Learning in Canvas the first time you use it.

- When you have completed the reflection click Submit Assignment. If you do not click Submit Assignment it will not be saved.

The Process After You Click Submit Assignment
The Engaged Learning Coordinator will review the Engaged Learning Experience Form responses you provide to verify the dates and hours of participation. A faculty or staff reviewer will read and score your reflection. The reviewer may approve your submission, or they may deny it. If denied, you will receive a Canvas Messenger notification telling you how to improve or change it. Then, you should quickly resubmit it using the same assignment (in Reflection #1, for example) for another review. Soon after the experience is approved, the Engaged Learning Coordinator will report the points you earned to the Registrar, who will upload them to DegreeWorks and your ELTranscript. Points are reported weekly or as needed.
Important Facts
- You cannot combine hours spent in different types of experiences into one submission form. Only information relating to that specific experience should be entered in the form. The only exception to this rule is Volunteer Service, where service performed with multiple organizations may be combined to reach 20 or more hours and submitted in one Canvas reflection form.
- Hours may be accumulated over more than one semester or academic year until you can reach 20 or more in one experience. This will allow you to participate in an experience that is available for limited hours each semester or year until you can accrue 20 or more hours and can submit the experience in Canvas. Examples of this type of experience would be:
- Unified Special Olympics Bowling
- Admissions Ambassador, Bronc for a Day, or other Admissions experiences
For a list of experiences and which Engaged Learning category they will earn points in go to the Experiences On and Off Campus page.
For instructions on how to submit volunteer service hours see the Community Service page.
