What are you doing now?
I am currently a Ph.D. candidate at The Ohio State University in the Environmental Graduate Studies program, specializing in environmental public health. My research focuses on air quality, environmental justice and community engagement. I work with an emerging low-cost sensor company to help distribute air quality sensors to communities. Additionally, I am involved in developing the front-end platform for the project.
What experiences did you have at Rider that helped prepare you for where you are today?
My research experience and involvement in the McNair Scholars Program were instrumental in preparing me for the many opportunities and challenges I face today. Conducting research opened my eyes to a range of possibilities and allowed me to develop valuable skills. The excitement I felt while working on meaningful projects helped me better understand the kind of work I’d like to pursue after completing my degree. The McNair Scholars Program provided me with the tools and confidence to apply to graduate school while also teaching me how to navigate the unspoken rules and expectations of graduate studies.
Additionally, working as a tour guide with the Office of Admission sharpened my public speaking skills and made me more comfortable networking with strangers at various events—an ability that has been incredibly beneficial in both academic and professional settings.
Overall, my experiences at Rider helped me build confidence and become more comfortable in both professional and personal interactions.
Balancing work, studies, and personal happiness is essential."
How did Rider’s resources positively impact your success as a student?
The resources at Rider were amazing. Each year, I discovered new support systems that helped me in my personal and professional journey.
I greatly benefited from the support of my professors, especially when I decided to change my major. I don’t believe I’d be where I am today without their guidance and encouragement. Changing my major made me much happier, and I now truly enjoy the work I am pursuing. Had I attended a larger university, I likely wouldn’t have received the same level of individualized attention that Rider provides.
On a lighter note, I found the ample study spaces and late-night food options at Rider incredibly useful. As a night owl, having places to work (and snack) at all hours without disturbing my roommates was invaluable.
What is the key takeaway from your Rider experience?
The key takeaway from my Rider experience is that balancing work, studies, and personal happiness is essential. This lesson has helped me set strong boundaries and focus on finding joy—whether by going to concerts, reading a book, traveling, or engaging in other fulfilling activities.
