Rider University is set to host the New Jersey gubernatorial primary debates, welcoming the 10 confirmed candidates who seek to succeed term-limited Gov. Phil Murphy. The Democratic debate will take place on Feb. 2 at 7 p.m., while the Republican debate will be held on Feb. 4.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, Rep. Josh Gottheimer, Rep. Mikie Sherrill, New Jersey Education Association President Sean Spiller and former Senate President Steve Sweeney are confirmed for the Democratic debate. State Sen. Jon Bramnick, former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli, former State Sen. Ed Durr and NJ 101.5 radio host Bill Spadea are confirmed for the Republican debate.
The debates are sponsored by The New Jersey Globe, On New Jersey and the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University, with Save Jersey as an additional sponsor for the Republican debate. Laura Jones, Emmy Award-winning host of “New Jersey Politics with Laura Jones,” will serve as the moderator.
“We are thrilled to host the inaugural gubernatorial debates. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to see the top contenders for the state’s highest job and ask questions important to them about New Jersey’s future,” says Micah Rasmussen ’92, the director of Rider’s Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics, who will serve as a panelist for the debates, alongside New Jersey Globe editor David Wildstein and New Jersey Globe political reporter Joey Fox. Save Jersey Editor Matt Rooney will be a panelist for the Republican debate.
The debates will be available for live streaming and replay on newjerseyglobe.com and onnj.com.
