The purpose of the Making Connections program is to support Rider science students. Participating members (called J&J STEM Scholars) engage in a range of activities aimed at fostering academic and professional development. By building a community of driven individuals, the program aims to contribute to the success and representation of diverse talent in the field of science.

The program facilitates networking opportunities, provides financial support, and promotes meaningful connections among students and professionals in their desired career fields.

J&J STEM Scholars benefit from various activities and opportunities, including:

  • Networking with Professionals: Engage in networking events and opportunities that connect scholars with professionals working in their chosen science-related careers.
  • Connecting with Peers: Interact and collaborate with other scholars in their majors, fostering a strong sense of community and mutual support.
  • Building Relationships: Develop meaningful relationships with peers and professionals, laying the foundation for future academic and career success.

Benefits

A stipend will be provided to cover the cost of science textbooks, reducing financial barriers to academic success in the field.

Making Connections hosts a monthly speaking series that brings a diverse group of scientific professionals to Rider’s campus. Scientists will speak to students about how the content taught in Rider’s introductory science sequence is used in real-life, professional settings like research, medicine, athletic training, and more. They'll also share details about how they chose their careers and the steps they took to get them. J&J STEM Scholars receive stipends for each speaking event they attend, helping them offset any related expenses and encouraging active involvement. These events are carefully curated to provide valuable insights and exposure to various professional pathways.

Access to a network of professionals and mentors in various Science-related fields is a major pillar of the program. In addition to Making Connections guest speakers, one large STEM networking night is anticipated each semester. Students can expect to meet with professionals from many scientific fields to learn more about career options and internship opportunities.

Establish a strong support network of fellow scholars who share similar academic and career aspirations. The Making Connections Program promotes a collaborative and encouraging environment where scholars can learn and have fun together. For first-year students, mentoring from second- and third-year scholars is also provided.

Requirements:

To remain eligible for the Making Connections Program, participants must fulfill the following requirements:

Attendance at Speaking Series Events: Scholars must attend a minimum of two Making Connections events each semester to stay engaged with networking opportunities.

Weekly Meeting Attendance: Regularly attend at least 75% of the weekly meetings to benefit fully from the program's academic and networking support. These meetings serve as a platform for skill development, community building, and updates on program activities.

Utilization of Academic Support: Scholars must make use of academic support services provided by the program for their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) classes. This ensures they receive the necessary assistance to excel in their academic pursuits.
