Capital Health at Rider

As the official health care partner of Rider University, Capital Health oversees Rider’s student health center and provides primary care health services. Our Nurse Practitioners can evaluate, diagnose, treat, order diagnostic tests and write prescriptions when medically necessary for a variety of acute illnesses, minor injuries, and sexual and reproductive health. Our campus health and wellness navigator works as a liaison between Capital Health and the University to ensure students have access to high-quality services and health education resources.

For all of our students requesting testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) talk with your provider to determine which tests are most appropriate for you.  Many test can be performed through a urine sample and other testing will require bloodwork. Talk with your provider if you have any questions or concerns related to confidentiality.

Students who need physicals for study abroad, academic or work purposes may request physicals at the Student Health Center. Please bring any forms that are needed with you to the health center and complete your portion ahead of time. Study abroad physicals should be scheduled 4-6 weeks prior to travel. This allows time to update required and recommended vaccines and to make referrals to specialists if necessary.

Study Abroad Resources

  • www.cdc.gov/travel:   The Center for Disease Control is an excellent resource for health related travel information.  Recommended and required vaccinations can be reviewed along with any current health/safety alert(s) about the country to which you will be traveling.
  • www.passporthealthusa.com:  With an office in Lawrenceville and other locations in NJ, this clinic offers travel vaccines and consultations when traveling to countries with high risk of infectious diseases. Located at: 132 Franklin Corner Road, Lawrenceville NJ  08648. Phone- (732)-345-0029
  • www.idcare.com:  Also specializing in travel medicine with several locations in NJ.  Hillsboro would be the closest location to Rider University. Located at:  105 Raider Boulevard, Suite 101, Hillsborough NJ  08844. Phone- ( 908)-281-0221

Upon your return

Some countries have a high rate of tuberculosis (TB) transmission.  Since there is no vaccination or prophylaxis for TB a post travel screening is recommended.  At your pre travel health assessment you will be told if the country that you are traveling to has a high rate of TB.  If this is the case you will be instructed to return to the Student Health Center, or your own provider, 12 weeks after your return for a Mantoux/PPD  test.  This skin test will determine if you have been exposed to TB.  If this is the case, you will be offered treatment to prevent conversion to active TB.

The student Health Center stocks select vaccines. Please call the office to verify prior to scheduling an appointment.

The University typically holds annual flu vaccine clinics each fall. Dates and times will be communicated each fall.

There are two kinds of tests that are used to detect TB bacteria in the body: the TB skin test and TB blood tests. Currently, the Student Health Center only offers the TB Blood Test. If you prefer to have the TB Skin Test local facilities like CVS Minute Clinic, urgent cares and your primary care office should offer this service.

The TB Skin Test:

  • Also called Mantoux tuberculin skin test (TST).
  • A TB skin test requires two visits with a health care provider trained to perform TB skin testing. On the first visit the test is placed; on the second visit the health care provider reads the test.
  • Positive skin test: This means the person’s body was infected with TB bacteria. Additional tests are needed to determine if the person has latent TB infection or TB disease.
  • Negative skin test: This means the person’s body did not react to the test, and that latent TB infection or TB disease is not likely.

The TB Blood Test:

  • Also called interferon-gamma release assays or IGRAs
  • Two TB blood tests are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are available in the United States: the QuantiFERON®–TB Gold In-Tube test (QFT-GIT) and the T-SPOT®.TB test (T-Spot).
  • A TB blood test requires one visit with a health care provider. The student will receive a lab slip that will need to be taken to a lab facility to be drawn (i.e. LabCorp, quest).
  • Results take about one week. Your test results will post to your Athena patient portal.
  • Positive TB blood test: This means that the person has been infected with TB bacteria. Additional tests are needed to determine if the person has latent TB infection or TB disease.
  • Negative TB blood test: This means that the person’s blood did not react to the test and that latent TB infection or TB disease is not likely.

Some of the conditions that can not be treated in the Health Center include (but are not limited to):

  • Allergy Shots
  • Infusion therapy or administer injectable medications ordered by another provider
  • Blood work ordered by another provider
  • Titration of medication for chronic conditions – such as diabetes, asthma, anxiety, depression, etc.
  • Prescribe controlled substances - typically used to treat pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia, ADHD, etc.
  • Hearing, vision, and dental problems
  • Suture, foreign body removal
  • X-ray, EKG, and Ultrasound in the office. We can order an X-ray and/or US to be performed at an off-site location if needed.
