Summer Internship Opportunities

Summer provides students with the chance to explore history in their own backyard or to adventure away from home. This list is a work-in-progress of internships mostly outside of New Jersey. Many require applications (deadlines) and are highly competitive. A very few offer stipends. Use "Additional Resources" to find an internship closer to your home.

Advocates for New Jersey History, friends of the NJ Historical Commission, provides links to various Historic Sites, Organizations and Groups. Click on Affiliates.

National Register of Historic Places - New Jersey is the official list of historic places in New Jersey. Authorized under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Register is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect our historic and archeological resources. Properties listed in the Register include districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects that are significant in American history, architecture, archeology, engineering, and culture.

New Jersey Tourism, sponsored by the state division of travel and tourism, provides lists of historic sites, museums and much more.

Garden State Legacy is a free online magazine dedicated to New Jersey history. The website also includes a directory of groups, museums and sites (History in Your Backyard).

Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance's Job Bank is the region’s definitive source of employment opportunities in the arts and culture industry. The Job Bank also lists volunteer and internship opportunities.

National Council for Public History is the national professional organization for public historians and publishes the field’s journal The Public Historian. Their “Resources” page includes links to jobs and internships.

National Council for Preservation Education includes professional employment and internship opportunities throughout the country for historic preservation and allied fields.

Student Conservation Association, although primarily focused on natural resource conservation, offers many internships and associate positions involving historic resource management and historic preservation. Click on “Conservation internships” for the main page, with opportunities searchable by location, length and type of job, and interests.
