Managing the commuter college experience

Successfully managing your commuter experience requires planning and organization. From accounting for traffic and parking to balancing academics, work, and family responsibilities, every commuter's situation is unique. By planning ahead, you can make the most of your time on campus while maintaining a well-rounded schedule.

Consider these key strategies for success:
  • Plan Your Morning Routine – Give yourself extra time for traffic, parking, and walking to class to ensure you arrive stress-free. Plan to arrive early; ideally 30 minutes before your first class or activity.
  • Stay Organized – Keep a calendar to track assignments, work schedules, and commuting time to avoid last-minute stress.
  • Prepare for the Unexpected – Have backup transportation options in case of car trouble. Keep essentials like chargers, snacks, extra supplies and a change of clothes in your car or bag.
  • Maximize Breaks Between Classes – Use campus study spaces, visit professors during office hours, or grab a meal with friends.
  • Start a Study Group – Don’t be afraid to reach out to students in your class and make connections.
  • Get Involved – Join a club, attend events, or participate in campus activities to stay engaged in the Rider community.
  • Balance Academics, Work, and Home Life – Set a routine that allows time for studying while managing responsibilities at home or a job.

Students gather in the Commuter Lounge to study, eat and relax.

Rider provides a variety of spaces where commuter students can study, relax, and engage with the campus community throughout the day. Whether you need a quiet study spot, a place to unwind, or access to essential resources, these spaces are designed to support your success:

  • Commuter Lounge (Bart Luedeke Center, 1st floor) – A dedicated space for commuters. Here, you can relax in between classes, heat up a bite to eat and use the microwave and utensils provided by the Association of Commuting Students, and get involved in activities that happen most Tuesdays and Thursdays during the open period! The Commuter Lounge also offers free to use lockers if you need a spot to stash your things between classes.
  • Student Recreation Center – A great spot to take a break, grab a Starbucks, or use the fitness center between classes. You can also play foosball, pool, video games, and more at the game room.
  • Moore Library – At the heart of campus, students can find Moore Library. Students can access quiet study areas, and group study rooms, with complete access to computers, printers, and other technology. The library allows students to browse books and academic journals, and also provides a borrowing service for textbooks.
  • Zen Den (Bart Luedeke Center, 1st floor) – A relaxation space to quiet the racing mind of a college student! Students can hang out in hanging chairs and bean bags, all while coloring, playing with fidget toys, or using aromatherapy.
  • Computer Labs – Located across campus, these labs provide access to technology and software needed for coursework.
